For Connoisseur Kitchens’ Mark Geurts, working with PlyPlay is a pleasure from start to finish.
‘From the day the prefinished plywood sheets are delivered to the factory to the installation of the kitchen on site, PlyPlay is just great to work with,’ says Mark, who designs and manufactures custom-made kitchens and joinery. ‘The boards are light and easy to move around the factory and they come with a protective plastic film, which is really handy. It means we can work on the boards without scratching the surface and write our set-out on the film to avoid lots of masking tape notes.’
For a recent brief for a Queenstown kitchen, Mark used birch plywood, a durable, hard-wearing material that is much more water-resistant than MDF, making it ideal for kitchen cabinets. The client wanted a modern look with continuous handles, and Mark also sanded the edges and mitred the corners for a clean, handcrafted finish.
PlyPlay comes in three different colours that complement the warmth of the timber. The client chose Double Trouble and Blonde Ambition, both highlighting the natural grain of the birch. ‘We grain-matched everything and used natural oil on the edges instead of varnish,’ says Mark. ‘As well as the kitchen cabinets we also made bedside tables and coffee tables for the client.’
The ply panels are prefinished with a UV-coating, which means no solvents, no smell and a lot less labour than a lacquered kitchen. ‘PlyPlay is so easy to work with and very versatile” says Mark. ‘The finished kitchen looks great and, most importantly, the client was happy.’
